Jared Byers

Jared Byers is a fourth generation, Arkansas Department of Corrections, employee. He began his career in February of 2001, as a Correctional Officer I, at the Varner/Varner Supermax Unit in Grady, Arkansas. Over the course of the next 24 years, his commitment and passion for corrections has guided him to his current position as Warden of the largest institution in the state of Arkansas. 

 

Mr. Byers continued his climb through the ranks of security at the Varner/Varner Supermax Units, promoting to Corporal in March of 2002. He quickly promoted to Field Sergeant in April of 2002 at the Varner Unit. In March of 2008, Mr. Byers promoted to Building Lieutenant of the Varner Unit. He promoted to Building Captain in June of 2009 and Chief of Security in April of 2010, both at the Varner/Varner Supermax Units.

 

In April of 2011, Mr. Byers transferred to the Pine Bluff Unit as the Chief of Security. He remained at the Pine Bluff Unit until his promotion to Deputy Warden of the Cummins Unit in September of 2013. He remained at Cummins in that capacity until December of 2016 when he transferred to Deputy Warden of the Norris Unit (formerly the Maximum Security Unit) in Tucker, Arkansas. He then returned to the Varner/Varner Supermax Units in June of 2017 as the Deputy Warden. In September of 2019, Mr. Byers was promoted to Warden of the Maximum Security Unit in Tucker, where he remained until being promoted to Superintendent of the Ouachita River Unit in Malvern, Arkansas, in August of 2021.

​Mr. Byers earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice: Business Administration and Management from Liberty University in 2015. Outside of his career, Mr. Byers enjoys playing golf, hunting, spending time with family and friends, and experiencing new and different dining options.
